typical elements of Jazz

Typical elements of jazz dance are isolation movements, precise leg, arm and foot movements, powerful jumps and turns within a diverse and energetic dance style. Jazz dancing is a form that showcases a dancer’s originality.

a Typical Dance Class

Starting with a warm up of the body such as cardio and stretching, we will review the technical elements of the jazz style. We will rehearse moves such as grapevines, chasses, kicks, turns, leaps, etc. Dancers will be taught choreography each week exploring different elements, moods and styles of jazz (inspired from swing, latin, etc).

Class Attire

All outfits should be safe to dance in, comfortable, made with flexible material, and something the dancer feels happy and confident in.

  • Bodysuit (any colour, any sleeve length, dancewear or gymnastics wear)
  • Dancewear tights (nylon, spandex, or lycra fabric.) Any colour of tights are allowed for class.
  • Recitals and performances require light pink/pale tights for females for their costume.
  • Athletic shorts (any colour, can be worn over bodysuit or with a t-shirt)
  • T-shirt and tank top, with athletic shorts or leggings (any colours)
  • Dancers may want a thin sweater, something that is comfortable and flexible to move in.
  • Character costumes will be encouraged around the appropriate special occasions, like Halloween and Holidays.
  • Denim or other thick, stiff material is strongly discouraged.

Hair

Hair styles need to be pulled off the dancer’s face and secured so that it will stay in place all class. Some examples are:

  • a bun
  • braids
  • pony tail, with bangs clipped back.

Shoes

Jazz shoes are required for class (preferably canvas or leather, slip on with no tie up laces). These are designed to keep your dancer’s feet safe while helping them build the muscles and stability necessary for dance and getting them used to how dance shoes connect with the floor.
